Cold WI weather a concern for homeless shelters

APPLETON (WKOW) -- It's getting colder in Wisconsin, which is a concern for the homeless population in places like the Fox Valley.

Reports say homeless shelters already had a tough year in terms of demand, and officials are bracing for another increase. Jerome Martin is a director with the Emergency Shelter in Appleton. He says there are six shelters from Oshkosh to Green Bay, so if officials all work together they can help make sure people aren't living on the streets.

The Fox Valley Warming Shelter has been busy. The shelter had more than 10,000 stays in the year ending September 1, compared to about 7,600 people over the previous 12-month period.

Warming Shelter board chairman Gary Crevier says there's still hope that demand for homeless services will dip.
