Flash mob takes to the streets of downtown Eau Claire

Eau Claire (WQOW) - You've seen them on the news, Facebook and YouTube and Sunday in downtown Eau Claire. A flash mob took to the streets to spread the word about kindness.

The quiet streets of downtown Eau Claire were brought to life Sunday morning as a mob took to Barstow Street set to strike. Strike a pose that is: a pose of kindness.

"My freeze position was somebody was handing me a bottle of water and a sandwich because I've done that before. I've seen somebody, I didn't have much in my car, I didn't have any money with me but I had a sandwich and a bottle of water," says Travis Dodge, the event organizer.

Travis Dodge organized the freeze mob to kick off World Kindness Week.

"It's all about giving people what you have in the moment, I can get another sandwich, I can get another bottle of water," Dodge says.

The statuesque freeze mob quickly thawed and turned into a flash mob.

"We volunteered our time and held some practices at our dance studio and have been working with it for a couple weeks now. I've been trying to reach out more and I always encourage my students because you never know what is going to make a difference in someone else's life. Even something really small may have a big impact on someone and maybe they'll go on and share that with someone else," says Erin Bosse of Diamond Dance Studio.

"I would love to see people being the change that they want to see. So instead of seeing a change they want to see and wishing someone else would do it, to go make a change and be the change they want to see in reality," Dodge says.

Forget pitchforks and torches, the mob had hugs, handshakes and words of wisdom.

"Picking up garbage on the street instead of just walking by and ignoring it. You can take it into your own hands and say something to your friend or a parent or a family member and tell them how much they mean to you because you never know how much that means to them. We had cards to hand out to people saying things they could do to help brighten other people's days." Olivia Weiher and Michayla Thielen, volunteer dancers.

Random cards being handed out to random people, just to promote random acts of kindness.

Eau Claire was one of sixty cities around the world that held a flash mob today. It was organized by a non-profit called Life Vest Inside that promotes kindness. All the orange you saw people wearing is a signature of the non-profit, the same color as old-fashioned life vests.
