UPDATE: Bill approved to require students to take more credits

Posted:

MADISON (AP) -- Wisconsin high school students would be required to take three credits each of math and science, instead of two, under a proposal approved by the state Senate.

The bipartisan bill passed on a voice vote Tuesday comes as the state's school districts are implementing more rigorous academic requirements under the Common Core State Standards.
The higher requirement would also bring Wisconsin more in line with neighboring states.

The proposal allows for a computer science class to count as a math credit and an agricultural sciences course as a science credit.

The measure also gives schools flexibility to award math and science credits to students who are in career and technical education programs.
