Typhoon Haiyan's effects hit close to home for UWEC student

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The images from the Philippines are shocking and they hit close to home for one UW-Eau Claire student.

Catherine Manlolo was born and raised in the Philippines and moved to Wisconsin when she was 15. Much of her extended family is still there. She found out via Facebook that her family was safe, even though they live just an hour away from a community that was devastated.  She says the stories and pictures coming from her home country have put her on edge.

"The fact that I don't have the power to help them out right now since I am in college is really disturbing to me," Manlolo said "it's very stressful but finding out that they are safe is very relieving."

Catherine is also organizing a food and blanket drive to help survivors of the typhoon. She hopes to begin collecting items by Thanksgiving.
