Law salutes student service members

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Veterans and students in the military are now moving to the head of the class thanks to a new law.

Students in the military and veterans can now register for classes ahead of the general student population at UW schools and tech colleges.  The priority registration is a thank you to those students.

It's also a way to help prevent cases where some veterans using the G.I. Bill could not get into necessary classes, which delayed their graduation. That meant their G.I. Bill benefits ran out and they had to pay for school out of pocket.

"It takes one less stress away from these veteran students," said veterans coordinator Miranda Cross-Schindler "they don't have to worry about stretching out that graduation date or maybe having to pay for it out of pocket because they no longer have benefits. So it will certainly ease the lives of a lot of our students."

Students who qualified were able to sign up for classes at UW-Eau Claire starting this week.
