New program makes it easier for veterans to claim discounts

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Veterans are eligible for discounts and benefits at many businesses and through a new program it will be easier for them to claim those discounts.

Starting on December 2nd a new state effort will give military veterans the option to have an identifier put onto their driver's licenses.

If they choose to participate the word "veteran" will appear in red on the front of their license.

"If they didn't have a military id they have to bring in a dd214 which has their social security number which some people aren't comfortable with," said  UW- Eau Claire veterans affairs coordinator Miranda Cross-Schindler "So with having veteran right on their license it will make it a lot easier for all service members."

The usual license renewal or replacement fees will apply. Before heading to the DMV veterans need to complete an eligibility process. To begin that process head to or call 1-800-WIS-VETS
