UW flex degree program launches, hundreds signing up

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The state's UW-System launched a brand new way to earn college credit Monday; it's called the flexible degree program. Sign up for spring semester classes opened Monday morning. The program awards students' credit based on what they already have learned, either at school or on the job.

UW-Stout may soon have more non-traditional students on the sidewalks of campus.

"I think we need to test the waters a little bit with this certificate program before we dive deep into the waters and develop a whole degree program."

UW-Stout is in the midst of designing the framework for their flexible degree program.

The flexible degree option opened for enrollment at the 13 two-year UW-System schools Monday morning.

"Students can take assessments or exams of submit projects or paperwork so that they're given credit for those on their own pace. So you can in a sense test out of these different modules."

The earliest the program would be available at UW-Stout would be next fall.

"What we're seeking to do is offer our project management minor and make it into a certificate program."

That certificate could be used in stand alone fashion on a resume. But it can also be used at any other UW-System school for credit toward a four-year degree.

"Those set of courses, approximately 18 to 20 credits, would be taken by students and then those credits would be applied to another degree program."

Opening its doors to a wide variety of students is something the college is looking forward to.

"Students will be free to transfer these credits wherever they want. It would depend on the receiving institution as to whether the courses would help satisfy their own degree requirements."

Statewide more than 900 students signed up Monday for the new flex program.
