City of Chippewa Falls buys plaza building

Chippewa Falls (WQOW) - A $65,000 purchase will help give downtown Chippewa Falls a different look.

The corner of bridge and spring streets is a hot bed of redevelopment and the temperature went up a little more Tuesday night. The city of Chippewa Falls agreed to buy the plaza building for $65,000.

"The primary objective is to get rid of a blighted building that's just going to deteriorate and become more and more of a problem in downtown Chippewa Fall," said City Planner, Jayson Smith.

"We got a very good price, said Mayor Greg Hoffman "This is a very lucrative corner. Think it would provide some really good possibilities for someone that's interested in it."

"It's at a point now where no owner is going to have the wherewithal to invest the kind of money that needs to be invested in the building and keep it up for the long term," said Smith.

Some tenants have already left the building while others are still there. City officials say that they will close on the building by the end of January. Tenants will have 180 days from the closing date to vacate their space.

It could cost the city as much as $200,000 to tear down the building.  That money would come from a TIF district.

"We're putting up buildings downtown not for ten or twenty years but fifty to one hundred years plus," said Hoffman "I think it shows we're making a very serious commitment to downtown."

The city hopes to begin tearing down the building next summer.
