Black Hawk wins Division 7 state title

MADISON (AP) -- Senior tailback Tanner Sweeney rushed for 146 yards and two scores as Black Hawk used a dominant second half to beat Glenwood City, 44-22, to win the WIAA Division 7 championship Thursday at Camp Randall in Madison.

Starting with Sweeney's 65-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half, the Warriors (14-0) broke open a 14-14 game by scoring the next 30 points. Black Hawk finished with 403 total yards and picked off Hilltoppers quarterback Nick Mrdutt four times.

Black Hawk outscored its five playoff opponents 235-67 and won its first football state title in its second appearance, first since 1998.

After scoring 34 points in last year's second half to win the division 7 title, Glenwood City (12-2) was held scoreless after halftime, resulting in a season-low point total for an offense entering the state final averaging 46.2 points per game.
