Orphaned sea lion finds home at Milwaukee zoo

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- The Milwaukee County Zoo is the new home for an orphaned sea lion pup.

The pup is named Nalu.  In September, he was found abandoned on the Pacific coast in Santa Barbara, California.  He was only three months old.

The staff at the Santa Barbara Marine Mammal Stranding Center determined he was malnourished and dehydrated.  They believe he was somehow separated from his mother.

Zoo officials say Nalu could not be released because he was still of nursing age.  A sea lion pup does not begin eating meat until reaching the age of six months to a year.

Nalu arrived at the Milwaukee County Zoo on November 7th.  He will be shown in public this spring.

According to the zoo, there will be an estimated 1,000 sea lion pups stranded on the beaches this year alone.
