City approves plan to demolish car wash, build sports complex

MADISON (WKOW) -- The south side of Madison is closer to having a new space for kids who live in a troubled neighborhood.

Community leaders say the city of Madison recently gave approval to demolish an abandoned car wash on Badger Road.

The congregation at The Fountain of Life Covenant Church, which purchased the property adjacent to the church, gathered Sunday at the site. The church plans to use the space for a sports complex where kids can play soccer, basketball and mini golf.

The church has been working with other non-profit organizations on the project, hoping to create a safe area for people of different backgrounds to come together.

"I grew up in south Madison, and I know how important it is for kids to play together and my cross-cultural relationship began from running track and playing together in the community," says Pastor Alexander Gee, Jr. with Fountain of Life.

Demolition is scheduled to begin this week. The church hopes to have the area finished by spring.
