Man accused of causing hospital lockdown charged with child abuse

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A man accused of causing a lockdown at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is facing a new charge of felony child abuse.

Authorities say Ashanti Hendricks either dropped or threw the baby he was holding when police officers approached him in the hospital's neonatal unit on Nov. 14. The child suffered a skull fracture.

Prosecutors filed an amended complaint for Hendricks' preliminary hearing Monday. The Journal Sentinel says the 22-year-old defendant waived the preliminary hearing and pleaded not guilty to all charges. Hendricks is also charged with possessing a gun as a felon and bail jumping.

Police responded to Children's after getting a tip that Hendricks was wanted on a warrant, was known to carry a gun and was visiting the hospital. Officers say they shot Hendricks after he drew a gun.
