UPDATE: All lanes open on HWY 11 after fatal accident

SHULLSBURG (WKOW) -- Lafayette County Sheriff's Office says all lanes on Highway 11 are open Tuesday morning after being closed down for nearly 20 hours after a traffic accident.

Authorities say the lanes are open for the morning commute but may close again depending on the ongoing investigation after a tow truck and semi-trailer collided Monday afternoon at the intersection of State Highway 11 and Summit Road.

SHULLSBURG (WKOW) --A fatal accident on Highway 11 yesterday afternoon continues to impact traffic Tuesday morning.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office, a large tow truck driven by Steven J. Humphrey, 54-year-old of rural Shullsburg, collided with a semi-tractor driven by Alfred J. Rott, 58-year-old of Monona.

Authorities say both vehicles were destroyed at the scene and ended up in the ditch on Highway 11.  The semi-trailer contained anhydrous ammonia so the Hazardous Materials Team from Grant County and Jo Daviess County responded to the scene.

Lafayette County Chief Deputy Coroner Richard Ruf pronounced Alfred Rott dead at the scene.  Humphrey was transported to Lafayette Memorial Hospital by ambulance for injuries sustained in the crash.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says Highway 11 remains closed this morning after a crash that happened almost 20 hours ago.

The left lane remains closed in the westbound lane at Highway 11 & County E/Summit Road.  The re-opening of the highway has been delayed because of a possible anhydrous ammonia leak.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

SHULLSBURG (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation says as of 10 p.m. Monday, Highway 11 remains closed after a crash more than 10 hours earlier.

All lanes are closed in both directions at Highway 11 & County E/Summit Road.

Eastbound drivers on Highway 11 should exit at Highway 80 and go north to Highway 81, then east to Highway 23, back to Highway 11. The directions should be reversed for westbound drivers.

SHULLSBURG (WKOW) -- A stretch of Highway 11 in Shullsburg is closed because of a crash between a semi and a tow truck.

The Lafayette County Sheriff's Department says the crash happened just before noon Monday.

Sheriff Scott Pedley says a tow truck was going north on Summit Road when it entered Highway 11 and was hit by an eastbound semi.

Pedley says the driver told investigators he was unable to stop because of the snow-packed and slippery roadway.

Hazardous materials teams are on scene working to contain the contents of the semi trailer.

As of 5:30 p.m. Monday, Sheriff Pedley says he anticipates Highway 11 will be closed for the next several hours at the intersection while the vehicles are removed and the Hazmat crews finish their work.
