Southview Elementary School may see second expansion since 2011

Chippewa Falls (WQOW) - A school that recently expanded is once again feeling the squeeze.

Southview Elementary School added space two years ago and with that, the district was able to add two special education classrooms as well as a mechanical room. This time around, the proposed expansion plans would be across the board for students from kindergarten up to 5th grade.

"What we'd be looking to do is expand this to a three-section elementary so there would be three teachers at each grade level," Dr. Brad Saron, Chippewa Falls Superintendent.

Southview Elementary School in Chippewa Falls may soon be growing once again.

"Like all communities we have pockets of growth in different areas and right now, we have our Lake Hallie municipality that's seeing growth and right now Southview is serving that municipality along with Halmstead. So we see an up tick in enrollment in those places," Saron said.

The school says it's operating at capacity.

"Here at Southview, we saw about a five percent increase in enrollment. We saw anywhere from a 15 to a 20 student increase," added Saron.

Limited space within the building is cramping children and adults.

"Just general office space, where teachers make preparations, make copies. All of that is squeezed," Saron said.

The superintendent told the school board he would like to see Southview expand again.

"Our best possible scenario is to have the facility ready for the beginning of next school year, although we would adapt pending the construction schedule," said Saron.

While the district is still looking at the size and scope of the expansion project, one thing seems fairly certain.

"Southview is really blessed with a good amount of green space in front of the school, and that's the area we would be looking to expand into," Saron said.
