2 WI students awarded Rhodes Scholarship

MADISON (WKOW) -- Two of 32 college students across the U.S. awarded one of the top honors in education are from the Madison area.

Drew Birrenkott, from McFarland, is a fifth-year senior at UW-Madison. He says he found out he was chosen to receive the Rhodes scholarship this weekend. He's majoring in political science, biochemistry and biomedical engineering.

Birrenkott says the scholarship will help him pursue his goal of creating health care systems in under-developed countries.

"What I think it does in a lot of ways is, it opens the door to my next step; and in large part, that's what I'm really looking to now is that next step and making sure I take advantage of this opportunity as best as I can to prepare me for what comes after that," says Birrenkott.

The Rhodes Scholars will get a full ride to Oxford University in England to study for two or three years. Birrenkott says he plans to go on to medical school in the U.S. after his time at Oxford.

Samuel Green of Spring Green is the other Rhodes Scholar from our area. He's a senior at the University of Chicago, on track to graduate with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and a master's in physical chemistry.
