Fewer deer bagged in opening of gun-deer hunt

MADISON (WKOW) -- Numbers are down at the beginning of this year's gun-deer season.

The Department of Natural Resources says hunters took 110,797 deer during the first two days, which is down 18% from last year.

In 2012, hunters bagged nearly 135,000 deer on opening weekend.

The 2013 buck harvest was down 25 percent and the antlerless harvest was down 9 percent.

Wardens blame the cold weather for likely driving many hunters home early.

They also noted the agency also issued fewer antlerless permits across the northern section of the state in hopes of growing the herd in that region, leading to a reduced harvest.
