Study: Tax rate in Dane Co. higher than much of nation

MADISON (WKOW) -- A national property tax study finds the average rate for a Dane County homeowner is significantly higher than counties in much of the nation.

A CNN interactive map shows findings of a data analysis by the Tax Policy Center.

Dane County's tax burden is the highest in the state at $4,279. The next closest is Waukesha County at $4,053.

The analysis found between 2007 and 2011, 60 percent of counties reported average property tax rates between $500 and $1,500 a year.

CNN reports the three most expensive counties include Westchester County, N.Y. at $9,647; Nassau County, N.Y. at $9,080; and Bergen County, N.J. at $8,893.

24 counties nationwide reported taxes below $250 a year, nearly all in Alabama and Louisiana.
