Hire suggests Kathleen Vinehout is leaning towards run for Governor

MADISON (WKOW) -- The hiring of a campaign organizer seems to suggest Wisconsin Senator Kathleen Vinehout is moving toward a run for governor.

The Democrat from Alma told Eau Claire's Leader-Telegram newspaper on Tuesday she has hired someone to organize a statewide campaign.

Vinehout has not yet officially declared her candidacy for governor. Mary Burke is the only Democrat currently running. Burke is a Madison Metro School Board member, a former state commerce secretary and ex-Trek Bicycle Corp. executive.

Former Democratic U.S. Rep. Dave Obey says that if Vinehout or another Democrat enters the race, he worries a primary would hurt the eventual candidate's chances against Republican Gov. Scott Walker, who expected to run for re-election. Obey campaigned with Burke last weekend in northwestern Wisconsin.

Vinehout says she's mostly amused by efforts to dissuade her from running.
