Owner of 6 S. Barstow St. wants building torn down

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The efforts to save a South Barstow building will be difficult because even the owner wants to knock it down.

Two months ago, the landmarks commission designated 6 South Barstow a local landmark. The building is the old Kline Department Store and it's one developers want to raze to make room for Eau Claire's Confluence Project. The owner appealed the decision by the landmarks commission and the city council will take it up next week. The attorney who represents the owner says it could cost millions of dollars to repair the building. He says that's not feasible, so as a result, if the building stays, it will be unoccupied, deteriorate, become further blighted and continue to be an eyesore downtown. The attorney says the best use of the property is to demolish the building.

The city council will hold a public hearing on the appeal Monday night and could deny or grant the appeal on Tuesday.
