Wisconsin to play South Carolina in Capital One Bowl

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Badgers football has accepted an invitation to play in the Capital One Bowl against South Carolina.

The Badgers finished 19th in the final BCS standings. South Carolina is ranked 8th.

The game will be played January 1, 2014 in Orlando.

The team's official Twitter account posted a quote from senior safety Dezmen Southward, in which he said, "I speak for entire team when I say we are excited to head down to Florida to play South Carolina."

Here's more information released by the UW:

It will be UW's fifth trip to Orlando in the last nine seasons. The Badgers have found success recently in Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium, going 3-1 there since 2006. In two of its three victories in Orlando, UW has defeated a higher-ranked team.

In the 2006 Capital One Bowl, to cap former head coach Barry Alvarez's final season on the sidelines, No. 21 Wisconsin defeated No. 7 Auburn, 24-10. The following year, again in the Capital One Bowl, the sixth-ranked Badgers beat No. 12 Arkansas, 17-14. In UW's last trip to Orlando, for the 2009 Champ Sports Bowl, No. 24 Wisconsin defeated the 14th-ranked Miami Hurricanes, 20-14.

Senior LB Chris Borland is the lone active Badger player to see action in that victory over Miami, registering 2.0 tackles for loss, including a sack, in the final game of his true freshman season.

Wisconsin finished the 2013 regular season with a 9-3 record, including a 6-2 mark in Big Ten play. The Badgers will be attempting to win 10 games for the fourth time in the last five years and ninth time in school history.

South Carolina enters the Capital One Bowl with a 10-2 mark, including a 6-2 record in the SEC. The Gamecocks are coming off a 31-17 win over then-No. 6 Clemson in their last game.

Wisconsin and South Carolina have never met on the gridiron. UW owns an 8-9-1 all-time record against teams currently in the SEC, including a 2-6 mark in bowl games. Wisconsin has not played an SEC team since playing five consecutive bowl games against the conference from 2003-07 (UW went 2-3 in those games). This will be the first of consecutive games for the Badgers against SEC foes as they are scheduled to open the 2014 regular season against LSU in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Aug. 31.
