Second graders learn the best way to beat the spread of germs

Eau Claire (WQOW) - All that glitters is gold...or is it germs? At least it was as second graders at Roosevelt Elementary School were covered in glitter to show how easy it is to spread germs.

Health officials from Mayo Clinic Health Systems showed them some tips and tricks to keep themselves and others healthy over the holiday season. The biggest tip: cough into your elbow, not your hands, which you should wash frequently. It doesn't matter whether the water is cold, hot or warm. Also, wash hands for at least 20 seconds, which is just as long as it takes to sing the ABC's.

The reason for the visit? One child's germs can easily be spread to hundreds of people.

"We just wanted to give kids a reminder on how to stay healthy and how to keep from getting their friends sick and pretty much keeping our whole community healthy. Can you guys show me again how to cough?" Marquita Davis of Mayo Clinic Health System says.

Another tip: as nice as hand sanitizer is, it doesn't erase the need for good old fashion hand washing. For every four times you use hand sanitizer, Davis says wash your hands once with soap and water.
