Hearing set for labeling Madison area lakes as "impaired" - WQOW TV: Eau Claire, WI NEWS18 News, Weather, and Sports

State to hold hearing on labeling Madison area lakes "impaired waters"

MADISON (WKOW) -- The state Department of Natural Resources(DNR) has proposed adding the Yahara lakes -- Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa and Kegonsa -- to a new category of "impaired waters", and that designation will be the topic of a December 19 public meeting in Fitchburg.
The proposal is part of a federally-mandated process the DNR must follow every two years to update the list of lakes and river segments not meeting water quality standards, and requiring studies that are aimed at restoring water quality for waters that are not meeting water quality standards. Such a study is already in place for the Rock River basin that encompasses the Yahara lakes, and there is already a local plan to address the lakes, according to the DNR.
