Area high school senior accepted to prestigious school

Boyceville, Wis. (WQOW) - The expression 'worth the wait'  takes on new meaning for high school seniors but for one area student, the wait is over and he says, was well worth it.

Peter Duerst of Boyceville was just accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or MIT. Out of the nearly 7,000 students who applied through their early action program, only 612 were accepted nationwide.

"At 11:15, I go to check their site. I read the first sentence telling me that I'm accepted and honestly, I had to read that a good five times before I realized I wasn't misreading it," Duerst says.

Peter is still unsure about his major - although he is interested in biological engineering. To prep for college, Peter took every advanced placement class the high school offered and even designed a few of his own.

"Entrance into MIT is an amazing accomplishment for anyone. I think people sometimes think people from small schools are at a disadvantage but with hard work and a lot of perseverance, you can accomplish anything you want to," Steve Glocke, the Boyceville Principal says.

Peter says he fell in love with the MIT campus after helping a friend, another Boyceville native, move into Harvard.
