Eau Claire (WQOW) - The beat of the drum is a sound of celebration in three Eau Claire schools. They're sharing a grant designed to improve music education.
On Thursday, RCU and Eau Claire's Own News 18 presented Linda Johnson's classroom with a Tools for Schools grant. Linda teaches adaptive music to more than 50 special needs students at DeLong, North and Memorial.
"With our students, one of their favorite things is drumming, that's one of the favorite things to do," said Johnson. "Actually, when I started the job 13 years ago, I started off with ice cream buckets. My classes run about 11 to 12 students and each year, I've been just trying to buy one drum per school... but it's a lot of kids and a lot of needs for drums."
She'll now be able to buy many more drums. Typically, a Tools for Schools grant is $300, but Linda's classroom is receiving a $1,000 award from RCU in honor of our two-year anniversary of the program.
We are taking nominations for the next $300 award. Click here if you'd like to apply.
