Altoona man arrested after early morning standoff

Altoona (WQOW) - SWAT teams were called to an Altoona home early Friday morning after a woman reported that a man held a gun to her head and beat her.

The incident started shortly before 3 a.m. Police say when they got to the home on Hayden Avenue, they found a man and woman outside the home. The man and woman were neighbors who had been visiting James Bauer and his wife, when Bauer and the neighbor woman allegedly got into a physical confrontation. The woman had head and hand injuries and said Bauer held a handgun to her head.

Police say Bauer and his wife would not come out of the house. After about three hours the SWAT team fired tear gas into the home. Bauer and his wife then came out. Police recovered the handgun and several other weapons from the home.

Authorities say it appears alcohol was a factor in the incident. Bauer is in jail, and will be in court Monday.
