Local shoppers get letters from RCU about Target data breach

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Shoppers are beginning to learn more about the big Target data breach.

On Monday, RCU in Eau Claire sent letters to thousands of customers who may have been victims.  Customers may have also received an automated phone call.  The local list of potential victims includes 1,219 credit card users and 5,239 debit card accounts.

In the letter (read it here), RCU says it has ordered a new card for them. It's up to the customer to decide whether they want to cancel their card now, or wait until the new one arrives. RCU also says if it can confirm your account information has been stolen, you would receive a call from the credit union, a call that would not be automated.

Also on Monday, Target says it's working with the Secret Service and the Department of Justice to investigate the case. Hackers stole debit and credit card information from millions of Target shoppers. The company is now facing lawsuits accusing it of failing to "maintain reasonable security procedures and practices."
