Christmas tree recycling program provides free mulch to citizens

Eau Claire (WQOW) - It's big, green, and taking up space in your living room, but what do you do with your Christmas tree after the holidays?

Well, if you live in Eau Claire County, you can recycle your tree by dropping it off in the Carson Park parking lot. It's all a part of the Merry Mulch program. The city will collect trees until January 19th, then those trees will later be turned into mulch and made available to county residents for free.

Todd Chwala from the City Forestry Division says, "I would imagine, if the City of Eau Claire didn't get involved in the Merry Mulch program, there would be anywhere from 3,500 to 5,000 trees that find their way into a landfill, and really, landfilling trees is just, in my opinion, an inappropriate use of a resource that we can reuse and recycle."

The Merry Mulch program will turn out an estimated eight to ten thousand cubic yards of mulch.
