Home total loss after rerouting early morning traffic on 93 in Eau Claire

Eau Claire (WQOW) - A major Eau Claire highway is open again after an early morning house fire detoured traffic for two hours.

It happened along Highway 93 around 6 a.m. Township Fire responded as well as Eleva, Mondovi and Rock Creek fire departments. Township Fire says no one lived there at the time but the owner, who lives next door to the home, called it in. He has been heating the house all winter long.

"There was no one home at the time, they just came to check on it and found a fire in the chimney or in the wall near the chimney and it just ballooned from there. It's a total loss," Mark Behlke, the Township Fire Department Battalion Chief says.

The fire department was able to contain the fire to the basement of the house. A backhoe was brought in to tear the house down so they could extinguish the remaining fire. It took crews five hours to battle the fire.

Eau Claire (WQOW) - UPDATE: All lanes of Hwy 93 are now open.

Eau Claire (WQOW) - All lanes of traffic are blocked on Highway 93 in Eau Claire going northbound and southbound near County Highway HH.

Our reporter is on scene of a home on fire in that area.  We've been told the occupants of the home are out of town.  It's believed the fire started in the chimney of the home.  Authorities say there are still flames in the basement, so crews are bringing in a backhoe to tear down the house to get to the fire.

The Department of Transportation suggests the following alternate Route: NB traffic should take WIS 93 to Lowes Creek Rd, north to County HH, east back to WIS 93. Reverse those directions for all SB traffic. NB semi truck traffic should take WIS 93 to US 10, west to WIS 37, north to I-94, east back to WIS 93.

We've been told one lane of 93 will be opening to traffic shortly.
