Correctional employee arrested for providing cell phones to inmates


Jackson Co. (Press Release) - On January 7, 2014, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office arrested a contracted employee at the Jackson Correctional Institution (JCI) for delivering article(s) to an inmate at the facility and misconduct. 

The initial information regarding this case was received on December 30, 2013.  Captain Tim Nichols from the Jackson County Sheriff's Office was contacted by officials at JCI and informed that they received internal information that inmates at the facility may be in possession of a cell phone or cell phones.  The information was investigated by JCI staff members and two cell phones were recovered from inmates inside the facility.  It was discovered that a contracted employee that works at the facility conspired with inmates to deliver the cell phones to the inmates inside the facility for money.  The inmates had outside resources to assist them with paying the contracted employee. 

The contracted employee involved with this incident is Karen Lee Robertson, age 52, from Sparta, Wisconsin.  Robertson is a contracted employee at JCI and was providing alcohol and drug counseling.  Robertson was interviewed and confessed to what happened.  Robertson was arrested and detained at the Jackson County Jail on felony misconduct and delivery of article(s) to an inmate. Robertson appeared in court on January 9, 2014 and received a $5000.00 signature bond and other bond conditions not to have contact with persons involved with the case.
