Couple looks on as home and belongings are lost in duplex fire

Eau Claire (WQOW) - An Eau Claire couple looks on as a fire destroys their home.

Trevor Hanson came home from work around eight this morning when he noticed smoke coming from the dashboard of his '95 Dodge Neon. He parked in his driveway and ran inside to get a fire extinguisher. When he came out, the car was engulfed and the flames spread to the duplex within minutes. He called 911 and was able to get his neighbor out of the adjoining apartment on Bellevue Avenue.  The couple, who married a little over a year ago, thought they lost a pet parakeet in the fire, but were very happy to find it had survived. They say overall, they're very lucky.

"We've got a really good community of people in Eau Claire and they were just reminding us that they've got our backs. And so, I'm happy for that. We've got enough people around us that we'll be okay," Trevor and Allison Hanson say.

The couple says most of their possessions were destroyed in the fire, but are thankful their wedding pictures are backed up online. Damage is estimated at $107,000.

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Part of an Eau Claire duplex was damaged when a car fire spread Friday morning.

Occupants of the duplex on 1203/1205 Bellevue Avenue said a car parked in the driveway started on fire around 9 a.m. The owner of the car went into the duplex to get a fire extinguisher, and when they returned, the fire had spread to the house.  That person got the occupants of the other half of the duplex out safely. A parakeet was killed in the fire, but no one else was injured.  Crews have gotten the flames under control.

As we learn more about this incident, we'll be sure to update this story.
