Local food bank benefits from statewide food drive

Eau Claire (WQOW) - There's a unique effort on right now aimed at tackling hunger here in Wisconsin.

The Defeat Hunger Bowl campaign is a statewide food drive put on by Walmart. Food donations are being collected at every Walmart and Sam's Club statewide.

All local proceeds will benefit the Feed My People food bank.

Walmart General Manager Bob Forsberg said, "All of the time there is a need for food and to help out our customers and our family members in the community, but this time of year, with all of the cold weather, and it just seems like there's even more of a need than normal."

This is the second year that Walmart has held the Defeat Hunger Bowl. Here's how it works: you stop by any local Walmart or Sam's Club and purchase one of the pre-packaged bags of food for under five dollars. Then just drop it in one of the Defeat Hunger Bowl bins located by the exits.

The campaign runs until early February. Other donations are also welcome.

Emily Moore from Feed My People said, "Desired items would be protein products, such as tuna fish, peanut butter, things like that, breakfast cereal is highly desired, and canned fruits and vegetables."

There will be brat stands Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Walmart and Sam's Club in Eau Claire. Three dollars gets you lunch and goes to a good cause.
