Class ring lost during WWII returned to owner

CHEYENNE, WY (WKOW) -- It's the ultimate story of love and loss. After 70 years, a class ring has been returned to its owner after her sweetheart lost it in battle.

94-year-old Betty McAleenan was reunited with her high school jewel after it was found in New Guinea, amid the wreckage of the plane crash that killed her husband.

Betty had given the ring to Staff Sergeant Robert Greebull when he was deployed during WWII. The ring, and Robert, made it through 38 successful missions over the South Pacific, but unfortunately were both lost during the 39th.

It took more than 40 years for the soldier's remains to make it home, but Betty says with the memento of their love back in her hands, she finally has some closure.
