WAUNAKEE (WKOW) -- Nearly 50 volunteers from the Waunakee area will travel to Guatemala and Haiti for a mission project to help impoverished children and their families.

They're taking over 2,500 pounds of donations to help. The volunteers will meet at the Dallas, Texas airport on Wednesday where they will meet with four additional teams from Vermont, Indiana and Arizona.

The goal of the trip will be to bring donated medications, clothing, shoes, toys, vitamins and other items to those people in need in Haiti and Guatemala.

Team activities in Guatemala will include: Mobile medical and dental clinic for a village with no access to health care, support of a feeding program for severely starved children, the installation of agriculture projects including fruit trees, vegetable gardens and egg laying hens.

The activities in Haiti will include: Mobile medical clinic for a village with no access to health care, the building of a high school for 230 children who will be the first in their village to attain education levels higher that 6th grade and construction projects to improve slum housing.
