Couple sues city over alleged Open Meetings Law violations

Posted:

Trempealeau County (WQOW) - The city of Independence is being sued over alleged violations of the Open Meetings Law.

A civil lawsuit was filed Wednesday by a couple from Trempealeau County.  Bill and Angela Sylla claim the Independence City Council violated the state's Open Meetings Law.  In one example, the couple points to a meeting in February of 2013.  The city council said it was going into closed session to "deliberate and negotiate the purchase or sale of property where competitive bargaining reasons require a closed session."

The couple alleges that did not happen, pointing to the closed session minutes which say two men came before the city council and invited members to take a tour of the Hi-Crush wash plant in Augusta.

Last fall, Independence and Whitehall annexed land to be used by Hi-Crush for a $100 million frac sand project.  Eau Claire's Own News 18 reached out to the city of Independence for reaction to the civil lawsuit, but did not hear back.
