Ski jumpers test tracks ahead of Silver Mine Invitational

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Wind was whipping around on top of the Silver Mine Ski Jump in Eau Claire Thursday. But that didn't stop some jumpers from testing out the tracks.

The 128th Silver Mine Invitational kicks off Friday. Event planners say the nine inches of snow we received earlier this week helped them fill in a few remaining bare spots on the hill.

"When you have extreme winds like this, they have a tail wind right now that's not necessarily dangerous or anything until it gets really gusty. They're not able to go as far because there's no pressure to lift them up sp they kind of get pushed right to the hill. If you have a headwind, then they're able to ride it and that's where you get the really long jumps," said Zach Jastrow, Silver Mine Chief of Hill.

Competitors from Eau Claire will face off against jumpers from Slovenia, Finland, Norway, and Canada.
