Mountain of snow: Following city crews as they clear streets and store snow

Posted:

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Even if we don't see much new snow this weekend, Eau Claire city crews will still be ready.

It's been a very busy week as they've been clearing the streets after nine inches of snow fell.

The city's streets and parking lots are filling up. Not with cars but with snow.

"We need snow storage," said Street Department Manager Steve Thompson. "As we keep pushing that snow to the sides, those piles just keep getting bigger and bigger."

That has the street department using heavy equipment to pick up and haul away snow to make room for more.

"We've got another two and a half months of snow left," said Thompson. "We need the room on our main streets."

So where do they take all that snow?

It goes to a large lot at the city's snow storage site.

"It's piled up there and when the spring starts to come it slowly melts," said Thompson. "Some years we have snow there until the 4th of July."

Thursday and Friday crews on hauling snow, but with the possibility of snow coming this weekend the city's trucks are filled with something else.

"We're kind of taking a step back today and getting ready for tomorrow," said Thompson. "We're loading trucks up with sand or salt as needed. Making sure all the blades are tuned up and ready and the proper blades are back on so we're ready to plow if we need to tomorrow."

With plenty of winter left the pile at the storage site is sure to grow.
