UPDATE: Testimony begins in Van De Loo trial

Douglas County (WQOW) - The trial of an Eau Claire doctor charged with sexually assaulting young male patients enters it's second day today, but it was the first day of actual testimony.

The case against former Eau Claire pediatrician Doctor David Van De Loo was moved to Superior due to pre-trial publicity.  Today, the first witness to come forward and claim the doctor touched him inappropriately, took the stand.  He was sixteen at the time. Members of his family also testified along with a nurse at the Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire where Van De Loo worked until he was fired amid the allegations.

There are 15 alleged victims in the case.  The trial is expected to last three weeks.

Douglas County (WQOW) - Tuesday began the trial for David Van de Loo.  The former Eau Claire pediatrician has been accused of sexually assaulting more than a dozen young boys, who were patients.

The trial was moved to Douglas County because of media coverage. The jury was picked and opening statements were delivered.

Nearly 80 potential jurors were brought in Tuesday.  The trial was moved to Superior to ensure that Doctor David Van de Loo's trial was heard by an impartial jury. Only one of the potential jurors had even heard of the case.

In opening statements district attorney Gary King told the jury that fifteen boys were sexually assaulted by Van de Loo.

King went through the specifics of each alleged assault, and concluded by saying there was no medical reason for Van de Loo to touch them the way he did.

Defense attorney Richard White told jurors there was indeed a medical reason that Van de Loo was checking for STD's and other abnormalities. He portrayed Van de Loo as a doctor absolutely driven to help his patients

White indicated that Van de Loo himself would take the witness stand and explain the medical basis for his actions.

Between fifty and a hundred witnesses are scheduled to testify in this trial, which is expected to take three weeks. The jury will start hearing witness testimony, Wednesday.

The trial could last up to three weeks.
