Four downtown businesses told to pack up and make way for Confluence project

Eau Claire (WQOW) - You may no longer see scissors snapping or hear the sound of barking coming from one local business. Puckabee's Eco Friendly Grooming, along with three other downtown businesses, will be packing up.

Melissa Kullman, the owner of Puckabee's, said, "Last Friday, we got around it noon. We got a letter with our move out date, which is March 31st."

This letter stated the South Barstow building complex, currently owned by John Mogenson, will be handed over to its new owners to make way for the proposed Confluence Project in downtown Eau Claire. The letter also said that the complex will be torn down to make way for the Confluence Project.

Kullman said, "I did expect it at some point. I didn't think it would happen this quickly. With the signatures collected for the referendum, I thought that might slow the project, so I definitely didn't expect it so soon. But, it was definitely in the back of my mind, and I expected it to happen at some point."

After two years downtown, Kullman says saying farewell to her current location will be hard. "When I originally looked at this spot, I just, I fell in love with this space. It just suited what I wanted to do perfectly. And I have a very unique business, so there weren't a lot of spaces that would not only allow me to have dogs but would allow the space of what I wanted to do. So, yeah I was sad because I saw this space and I thought I could be here forever and be happy."

Puckabee's says it plans to re-locate and re-open.  The three other downtown businesses that also received letters, telling them they must move out, include the Christian Science Reading Room, Scandinavian imports store and Upland Distributing.  Upland has said it plans to re-locate. We reached out to the Scandinavian Imports Store but the owner did not want to comment. We were unable to reach the owner of The Christian Science Reading Room
