UPDATE: Dad and girl escape Kentucky fire; 9 others dead


GREENVILLE, KY (WKOW) -- Kentucky State Police say the fire that killed nine people Thursday morning started accidentally.

Officials say the fire ignited from a combustible material against an electric baseboard heater in a bedroom.

All victims were found in a master bedroom and could indicate they were trying to escape through a window, however, investigators aren't quite sure yet. 

Eight children and their mother died in the fire, while the father and an 11-year-old girl escaped with injuries.

Autopsies were started Thursday afternoon.


GREENVILLE, KY (WKOW) -- Crews battle a house fire in western Kentucky where as many as nine people have died.

Greenville Assistant Fire Chief Roger Chandler says the fire was reported around 2:00 Thursday morning.  Eleven people lived at the home.

A hospital spokeswoman says two people were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN, an adult and a child.  She was not able to release any information as to their conditions.
