Mark Green was in the running for UW System president

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Newly released records show former gubernatorial candidate Mark Green was in the running to be the next president of the University of Wisconsin System.

A letter from the UW-System's senior legal counsel Jennifer Sloan Lattis shows Green and Dr. David Wilson were among the five final candidates for the position that eventually went to UW-Extension and UW Colleges Chancellor Ray Cross.

Green ran for governor as a Republican in 2006, but was defeated by Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle.

Wilson once worked as UW-Extension and UW Colleges chancellor and currently serves as president at Morgan State University.

After UW System President Kevin Reilly announced his plans to step down, the Board of Regents formed two committees: a search and screen committee, along with a selection committee. The search and screen committee forwarded four names to the selection committee: Wilson, Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Vice Chancellor Peter Garland, Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education President Robert King and UW-Extension and UW Colleges Chancellor Ray Cross.

The letter says Wilson withdrew his name before finalists were announced.

Green was the next most qualified candidate, but he did not gain enough votes from the search and screen committee to be recommended as a finalist.
