Jail for couple who prayed for dying daughter rather than seek medical help

WAUSAU, Wisconsin. (WKOW) -- A judge has ordered a Wisconsin couple to serve their jail sentences for praying over their dying daughter instead of seeking medical treatment for her.

Marathon County Judge Greg Huber Thursday ordered Dale and Leilani Neumann, of Weston, to begin serving their sentences later this year.

The Neumanns' attorney argued there is no reason for them to go to jail. He said the couple has suffered enough since the death of their daughter.

The Neumanns prayed instead of seeking help as their 11-year-old daughter, Kara, died at home in 2008 from a treatable form of diabetes.

Separate juries convicted the parents of second-degree reckless homicide in 2009.

But neither parent spent a day behind bars while the case was appealed.

The U.S. Supreme Court declined to take the case last year.
