MADISON (WKOW) -- Rep. Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) appears well positioned financially to win the 17th Senate District seat that Sen. Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center) will retire from at the end of the year.
Rep. Marklein is the only Republican candidate in the race and currently holds a 15 to 1 fundraising advantage over Ernie Wittwer, the lone Democrat running.
Rep. Marklein's latest fundraising report shows he raised $27,795 from July through December of 2013. That puts his cash-on-hand at $142,259.
Wittwer, who only declared his candidacy this past fall, raised $9,348 dollars in November and December. His cash-on-hand stands at $9,125.
But Marklein has had nearly six more months to raise funds than Wittwer, declaring his candidacy in April of 2012 to challenge Sen. Schultz in a GOP primary.
Schultz announced earlier this week he would not seek reelection, leaving Marklein and Wittwer as the only two candidates in the race.
