Annual Souper Bowl brings community together

MADISON (WKOW) -- An annual tradition provides a warm meal in exchange for a donation to a local organization.

A day ahead of the big game, the Souper Bowl brought out a crowd at Madison West High School this Saturday. The community soup dinner is the largest fundraiser for the UW-Madison student chapter of Habitat for Humanity of Dane County.

Money raised at the Souper Bowl will help build a home for a family from Africa.

"The family we're building for, they're a couple from Africa, so there an immigrant family so they come here and they have 4 girls, they have 4 daughters, so they're really excited to move to north Madison to begin a new life right here in Dane County," says Cheryl McCollum, a spokesperson for Habitat for Humanity.

Those who donated got a handmade bowl and a chance to meet local celebrity servers, like 27 Storm Track Meteorologist Laurie Mercurio, who dished out soup to attendees.

The Souper Bowl says they raised over $24,000 for the UW-Madison Chapter of Habitat for Humanity this year.
