Assembly sets hearing on tax cut plan; Senate waits

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Assembly is moving on Governor Scott Walker's tax cut proposal, setting a Wednesday public hearing on the plan.

Questions about the plan among some Republicans are holding up action in the Senate.

The governor's proposal calls for $406 million in property tax cuts and $98 million in income tax cuts.  Walker announced his plan after state tax collection estimates increased by $912 million.

Some Republicans, however, are concerned that the cuts will increase by $100 million the shortfall projected for the two-year budget starting in mid-2015.

Typically, the Legislature's Joint Finance Committee would hold a hearing and vote on the bill before either the Assembly or Senate would take it up. But

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, in an effort to move the package of tax cuts forward, scheduled public hearings in his chamber this week, varying from the usual procedure of the Joint Finance Committee holding a hearing and vote on the bill before it goes to either chamber. With the hearing happening on Wednesday, the full Assembly can take up the tax cuts on February 11.

Vos said Monday he's willing to negotiate with Senate Republicans on small parts of the plan, but he hasn't spoken with Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald's spokesman had no immediate comment.
