New grant for drug courts and TAD projects in WI

MADISON (WKOW) -- Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announces $1.5 million grant for new drug courts and Treatment Alternatives and Diversion (TAD) projects.

In a quite competitive application process, the grant was awarded to 12 Wisconsin counties and one tribe.  The money is to be used for the establishment of specialty court and pre-trial diversion projects.  Counties use TAD to establish programs in helping address non-violent offenders at higher risk of offending again.

Van Hollen has stated: "These programs have a proven track record of reducing recidivism, making good use of public dollars and meeting the needs of offenders while ensuring accountability."

Through rigorous program evaluation, TAD proves to be effective at increasing public safety, while reducing costs of local criminal justice systems.  Eighty-one percent of TAD graduates did not have any new convictions after three years and 97% stayed out of state prison after completing their program.

Based on the recommendations of 15-member review panel, the successful projects will be located in the following areas: Drug courts in Columbia, Jefferson, Lac Du Flambeau, and Waushara Counties.  TAD programs in Dodge, Eau Claire, Kenosha, Marinette, Pierce, Saint Croix, Trempeleau, Waukesha, Waushara, and Walworth counties.
