Cold weather creating water meter concerns

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) --- The Madison Water Utility says they responded to 38 customers in January with water meter issues involving freezing and cracking.
In 2013, they had 46 calls for the entire year.

The Water Utility says they have also had numerous calls about frozen laterals as well as 92 water main breaks in January.

Officials warn that the frost line is at 4-5 feet below ground but is expected to move deeper.

Tips for homeowners:
  • Make sure your basement is properly insulated and check for areas where cold air might be rushing in
  • Insulate pipes in unheated areas and attics
  • Never try to thaw a frozen pipe with an open flame
  • If you have had frozen lateral lines before, it might be a good idea to run a pencil-thin stream of water during the times of the day you typically run little water
  • You can call the utility to have water service shut off if leaving home for a few days.  There is a $50 fee for restoring service

Any issues with your water call the Water Utility dispatch at (608) 266-4661
