FDA lays out new formula regulations

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) --The FDA lays out new requirements, ensuring the safety of infant formula. The new rules are designed to ensure formula manufacturers test their products for salmonella and other pathogens before being distributed. The new rules would also require companies to include specific nutrients, including proteins, fats and vitamins.

Most formula manufacturers already follow these practices, but the rules are aimed at ensuring new formulas on the market also comply with the requirements.

The agency said breastfeeding is strongly recommended for newborns, but 25% of infants start out using formula, and by three months, two-thirds of infants rely on formula.
