Federal kidnapping charges filed against CO woman in Kayden Powell case

Posted: Updated:
MADISON (WKOW) -- The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, John Vaudreuil, announced federal kidnapping charges against 31-year-old Kristen Smith, of Denver, Colorado.

Smith is charged with kidnapping six-day-old Kayden Powell, of Beloit, in the early morning hours Thursday, February 6.

In the criminal complaint, police say they found emails from Smith on her phone that stated she had given birth herself on February 5.   They also found a fake pregnant belly in Smith's vehicle.

Police say Smith denied having anything to do with the missing baby until Kayden had been found.  She then gave police a map of where she left the baby and confessed taking him from Beloit.

More details here in the complaint.

The infant was found outside a gas station in West Branch, Iowa by the West Branch Police Chief Friday morning.
The criminal complaint states Smith took the baby from a home in the Town of Beloit and transported him across state lines to Iowa.  Smith was arrested Thursday on unrelated charges and is currently being held in the Cedar County Jail.
Smith faces a maximum penalty of life in federal prison if she is convicted.
The charge against her is the result of an investigation by the Town of Beloit Police Department, Beloit Police Department, Rock County Sheriff's Office, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Wisconsin Department of Justice-Division of Criminal Investigation, Illinois State Police, Iowa State Patrol, and West Branch Police Department.
