UPDATE: Authorities identify 28-year-old man hit and killed by train

Ladysmith (Press Release) - UPDATE: The victim has been identified as Jacob L. Lebal, age 28 of Ladysmith.

Ladysmith (Press Release) - On February 11, 2014 at approximately 11:57 a.m. the Rusk County Sheriff's Department Dispatch Center received a call from the Canadian National Railroad Police advising that one of their south bound trains had struck a pedestrian at the Lake Ave (U.S. Hwy 8) crossing in the City of Ladysmith.

The Ladysmith Police Department, Ladysmith Fire Department, Rusk County Sheriff's Department, Wisconsin State Patrol and Ladysmith EMS responded to the scene.  Officers located the pedestrian near the Miner Ave railroad crossing and later determined that the incident occurred at the Miner Ave crossing not Lake Ave (U.S. Hwy 8).  The investigation caused downtown crossings to be down for over two hours and U.S. Hwy 8 traffic had to be detoured.

The pedestrian was identified as a 28-year-old male from Ladysmith.  The Ladysmith man was transported to the Rusk County Memorial Hospital where he died from his injuries.  The man's name will not be released at this time.

The Canadian National Police Department and the Rusk County Coroner's Office are also conducting their own investigation regarding the circumstance of this case.

Ladysmith (WQOW) - A pedestrian was hit and killed by a train in Ladysmith on Tuesday.

It happened just before noon. A Canadian National spokesperson says one of their southbound trains struck a person who was walking. It happened at the train crossing on Highway 8 and County J. That person was killed.  No information about gender or age have been released yet.

Canadian National says that intersection does have crossing gates and lights to indicate when a train is coming through.  The company also says the crew sounded the train's horn before the pedestrian was hit.

Ladysmith Police are investigating the incident.  As soon as we know more, we'll pass along the information.

Ladysmith (WQOW) - UPDATE: All lanes of Highway 8 have reopened. We are still waiting to hear back from authorities about exactly what happened.

Ladysmith (WQOW) - All lanes of Highway 8 at County J near Ladysmith are closed due to a crash.

Witnesses say officers are still on scene and that an ambulance has come and left the area. A train is stopped in that area, as well.
