Eau Claire (WQOW) - The Eau Claire City Council has in its hands a plan to handle plastic bags going forward.
Last fall, the council postponed a decision on a proposal to cut down on waste. A group made up of city council members, citizens, business leaders and others met several times last year to discuss ideas. The group's recommendation is an 80% reduction in paper and plastic bag use over five years.
The resolution includes four phases: beginning with an effort to educate citizens and a partnership with retailers. If certain goals are not met through education, the city could take more aggressive steps, including a customer fee. That is considered a last resort. The council plans to vote on the proposal Tuesday night.
